Fresh air, scenic views, and a pint along the way – what more could you want from a day out?
The UK is home to some amazing walking routes that help you uncover the true beauty of the country. Whether it’s a gentle wander along a riverside path or a proper hike up a hill, there’s a trail for absolutely everyone.
Here are 5 walking routes we recommend you enjoy on your next Best Western break – as well as the pubs to stop at.
Tucked away in the heart of Perthshire, The Hermitage and Black Linn Falls walk is one of Scotland’s most beautiful short trails.
This easy circular route is about two miles long and only takes around an hour to complete. You’ll wander along well-maintained forest paths beneath some of Britain’s tallest Douglas fir trees, with the River Braan rushing below. The highlight is the dramatic Black Linn Falls, which makes the perfect excuse for a photo.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, pop into The Taybank which sits on the bank of the River Tay. Home to live music and hearty local food, it’s the best spot for a break or to unwind in after hitting your daily step count.
When you’re ready to put your feet up, you won’t have to go far. Head back to Best Western Balgeddie House Hotel where a warm welcome and a comfortable bed will be waiting.
Step into a real-life film set at Lacock Lovers Walk in Wiltshire, a short and scenic 1.3-mile route that feels like a stroll through history.
Starting from the Hither Way car park, this gentle loop takes about 30 minutes but packs in plenty to see along the way. You’ll pass rows of beautiful timber-framed cottages and backdrops from Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and more.
As you stroll through the winding lanes, you’ll pass the impressive St Cyriac’s Church and the historic Tithe Barn, reminders of the village’s medieval wool trade past. There’s something fascinating around every corner, including old, cosy pubs.
Step back into the 14th century in The Rising Sun or The George Inn where you can enjoy your favourite tipple, before continuing your walk and heading back to the Best Western Plus Angel Hotel.
A 30-min walk too short for you? Opt for the Allen Banks Morralee Tarn Walk in Northumberland instead. It’ll take you around 60-90 minutes to complete and will leave you feeling pretty pleased with yourself.
Start at the National Trust car park at Ridley Hall and follow the riverside paths. You’ll pass old summerhouse ruins, cross a couple of charming footbridges, and might even spot some wildlife along the way.
Stop at the Station Inn for a traditional Northumbrian pub where you can enjoy a pint of real ale or a hearty meal. Then carry on up to Morralee Tarn, a Victorian boating lake with peaceful water views. Top off the day by sinking into your bed at the Best Western New Kent Hotel.
You don’t always need to venture into the countryside to find peaceful walking routes. Sometimes, they lie in the middle of the city, like Richmond Park in London.
As London’s largest Site of Special Scientific Interest and a National Nature Reserve, Richmond Park is home to red and fallow deer, rolling hills and wide-open grasslands. It’s the perfect place to experience the great outdoors while staying close to the capital.
Take in the fresh air while hiking the Tamsin Trail, a scenic route of just over 7 miles or venture up to King Henry’s Mound for views of the city skyline.
And the fun doesn’t stop there. Stop by The Roebuck on Richmond Hill, a charming Georgian pub with views over the Thames. Treat yourself to traditional pub grub and make the most of your time in London by staying at the nearby Best Western Chiswick Palace & Suites.
Enter an enchanted garden, hop along stepping stones across sparkling streams and uncover natural dens and rope swings during a family walk on the Colby Woodland Garden Walk in Pembrokeshire.
Kick off your day the best way possible by heading out into nature with your little ones. The 2-mile woodland loop doesn’t take too much time and rewards you with views all the way to Carmarthen Bay.
Stroll through bluebells and camellias in spring, watch butterflies dance among summer hydrangeas, or crunch through golden leaves during autumn. It’s the perfect walk for the entire family.
Reward yourself and little ones with lunch at The Smugglers Bar and Grill. This family-run restaurant is a stone’s throw from the beautiful beach of Amroth and kids can enjoy the pirate themed play area while you enjoy the best in locally sourced food and drink. The Best Western Lamphey Court Hotel & Spa is just moments away.
