Both intimate and autobiographical, Fibonacci Quartet bring this deeply personal programme to life.
One of Europe’s leading string quarters, Fibonacci Quartet, brings their trademark brilliance to a programme of Scottish and Czech music, each work exploring the nature of love and communication.
In her First Quartet (2014) Helen Grime focuses on pairs of instruments in different combinations, exploring the way they speak’ to each other. Leoš Janáček’s Second String Quartet (1928), subtitled Intimate Letters, was inspired by the composer’s infatuation with Kamila Stösslová. It gives prominence to the viola, the instrument Janáček associated with Kamila.
More personal stories feature in Bedřich Smetana’s 1876 String Quartet in E minor, titled From My Life. It is infused with both the composer’s love of his country and anguish at his increasing deafness. Smetana entrusted what he called the small friendly circle’ of the string quartet to tell his story.
